Hollywood Sign

HOLLYWOOD SIGN
Bright Lights.
Shiny Stars.
Is this the America you are?
Do you get plastic surgery and facelifts every day?
Or do you open up your doors to people like me?
How many times miles must I walk down the streets,
To see the stars at my feet?
Is everyone here so glamorous and true?
Or is the true America like me and you?
Must I be in a movie and act?
Or can I learn a skill and teach it tic for tact?
Is America the golden hills I roll by in the car?
Or can it include flatlands and swamps like it does near and far?
Not far from this sign that represents lust,
Are lands where people represent trust.
They trust their neighbors, no need to look pretty.
They trust their neighbors, in small and big cities.
They trust their neighbors without fear or doubt,
They trust their neighbors, although they sometimes scream and shout.
It may be tough for the “Hollywood” life to see,
But trust comes quite natural to you and me.
Beyond the bright lights of Hollywood,
There stand farmworkers, proud and good.
They may not ever make it on TV,
But their hard work does affect you and me.
For at the top of the hill of the Hollywood sign,
You can see one side fields of crops left behind.
The other a side of glitz and glamour
But only one side makes the news and gains enamor.
The other is quite important in its own way.
The two faces of America side by side every day.
This double faced nation has had its struggles.
But you can count on both sides to minimize the troubles.
Sad movies, happy movies, failed crops, and crop gains
All equal a nation that has been through the pain.
From the beginning it’s dealt with being rich and poor.
Two sides of trust and trust no more.
The bright lights, and stars shine bright on one side.
While the darkness of fields is this true nations pride.
So the America you see from the Hollywood sign,
Can open your heart, or open your mind.
In America you can choose,
Would you like to act?
Or would you like to pick a trade you can teach tic for tact?
Whichever you choose the hills will be there.
So will the flatlands and swamps
People with wild and crazy hair.
Perfect makeup, dirt stains, and blue collard shirts,
Make up this America even when it hurts.
So whichever path you want you can start at 3rd and Vine.
That road will take you straight
To the Hollywood Sign.

    Commentary on the Hollywood Sign
The iconic Hollywood sign found in the mountains of southern California, specifically Mt. Lee has a very unique history. Before 1907 most of the movies in America were made on the east coast. In 1907 some bad weather in Chicago forced a Chicago based film company to move out to California to complete their film in time. This successful venture soon sparked a wave, and more studios then decided to come out California due to great weather and fewer regulations. By the 1920s Hollywood was a big town and millions of Americans were going to the movies each week. Hollywood became a place where glitz and glamour were synonymous with the name. (“History”)
The original “Hollywood” sign was actually a sign that said “Hollywoodland” and was an advertisement for a new real estate development by Harry Chandler in 1923. The sign was massive and cost $21,000 to erect that year. In today’s dollars that would be equivalent to around $285,861. This was a very expensive sign as an advertisement. Each of the original thirteen letters of the Hollywoodland sign were 30 feet wide and about 43 feet tall and included electric light bulbs to illuminate them. The massive advertisement could be seen for miles. The sign was originally intended to only be up for a year and half but of course still stands today some eighty years later though not as it originally did. The sign was actually rebuilt in 1978 with only the nine letters of Hollywood returning since it was no longer advertising a real estate development, but instead a city, and at this point a culture in itself. (“History”)
The image of the Hollywood sign relates to the course concept of images in America. In Gruesz’s article “America” she questions “who gets to define what ‘America’ means” (Gruesz 17). Hollywood has had a lot to do with defining what America means, not only to residents of this country, but also to the world. The images produced in Hollywood and sent out to the rest of the world are what many people think of America. When a person watches a movie, or television show and they have never been to the Midwest but the show is about the Midwest, then that is how the person may think of the Midwest. So many images of “America” come out of Hollywood. The “working class” image, images of the ghetto, images of farmworkers, images of Native Americans, and images of many other different types of people are produced in Hollywood. The way the country views many minority groups is a direct result of the images produced in Hollywood. Without these images, some people in small towns, may never get the chance to see people of different races, and backgrounds from them if they never left their small town. Some people may not even have had the motivation to leave their small town because without the images produced in Hollywood that show what life could be like for them outside of their small world. Hollywood inspires people to do things, sometimes bad, but for the most part good. The messages sent out to the world from Hollywood help to tell people the American story. How to live the “American Dream”. The American Dream that you can come from anywhere and make it out in Hollywood as an actor, singer, dancer, or producer. The dream that millions of people have from watching the images that come out of Hollywood. The image of the celebrities that live there make many people believe that everywhere in California celebrities are walking the streets all the time and it is no big deal to see them. Hollywood throughout the years has aided with war propaganda, civil rights movements, and the correct way of what “everyday life” should look like.
